Happy New Year Fashionistas!
It’s a new year and new trends, however, sometimes it’s good to stick to a timeless trend...and that is classic prints. There are so many options these days but for this post, we want to focus on our two favorite prints which are houndstooth and plaid. While it’s easy to incorporate these prints in traditional forms (masculine blazers, schoolgirl pleats, etc), the seasonal favorites can start to feel a bit blah if you don't branch out. Plaid and houndstooth may seem predictable, but you may be surprised by the fresh new ways to style these tried and true classics.
Houndstooth:
Houndstooth print has a timeless appearance that will never go out of style. Most often we see it in black and white, but this season the pattern features many bright colors combined with black. These multicolor variations offer a new twist on the classic print. Houndstooth can be paired with just about anything. For instance, take a houndstooth fitted sweater and wear it with a white shirt and complete the look by adding a pencil skirt. The result is a chic look, ideal for work or date night. If you want a little more pizazz, take your style up a notch with a houndstooth print dress, skirt or trousers. Pair the skirt or trousers with a crop top for a modern appeal. If you like a more casual but still show-stopping look, think a structured houndstooth blazer or longer wool coat with a blouse and skinny jeans.
If you are a beginner with this print, then start with accessories. How about a clutch, headband or houndstooth ankle-booties? Another great option is a scarf, it can be worn with a solid color shirt or you can update your coat with a statement pop. Accessories are the perfect way to play with a pattern without making a huge investment.
Plaid:
From pleated skirts and glossy rain jackets to versatile dresses, the range of plaid-printed offerings is truly marvelous this season. Here are the styling lessons we learned so far.
Plaid blazers have remained one of the most popular winter staples. It makes sense that it would withstand the trend test. It's an all-round piece that goes with anything from a white button-down to a vintage graphic tee. And it's even perfect under a warm coat during the winter months.
Plaid bottoms or skirts are a stabilizing force for a textured look involving ruching, ruffles, and leather. Wear it with a puffy-sleeved blouse and heels for a business casual look or with a leather moto jacket and a silk tank a laid back style.
Lastly, let’s not forget the flannel shirts, it just spells warm and cozy, which makes it the perfect closet item to have during the season. It’s a very basic item and an ideal way for one to wear it oversized! Pair it with your go-to leggings or knee-high boots for an effortless look.
No matter your age, there will be abundant styles of houndstooth and plaid for you to pursue. These traditional prints are all over the place and you have the choice among bright colors and different sizes. There are no rules, anything goes with these two prints.
Sincerely,
Sashé
